VPN for college Wi-Fi in India: hostel and campus networks
Campus and hostel Wi-Fi blocks more than any ISP: social apps, streaming, games, sometimes Telegram, and most VPN protocols. A VLESS key over port 443 looks like ordinary HTTPS to the campus firewall, so it gets through where VPN apps do not. Setup after the login page, honest limits, five days free.
No card. No KYC. The key arrives in Telegram in under a minute.
- Works with v2rayNG, Hiddify, V2Box, Streisand
- No app store needed
- UPI and crypto accepted
- 5 days free, then from ₹109 a month
- No logs, no account, no KYC
Why VPN apps fail on college Wi-Fi
A college network is not an ISP. It sits behind a firewall that allows a short list of ports, usually only web traffic on 80 and 443, and classifies everything else. OpenVPN, WireGuard and IKEv2 use their own ports and have recognisable handshakes, so the firewall either blocks them outright or the shaper slows them to nothing. The same appliance blocks whole categories of sites: social media, streaming, gaming, torrents, and often messaging apps during class hours.
That is why a VPN app that works on your Jio data dies the moment you join the hostel Wi-Fi. It is also why the fix is not another app but a protocol the firewall cannot tell apart from a normal website. VLESS with Reality runs on port 443 and completes a real TLS handshake with a real certificate, so to the campus firewall your phone is talking to an ordinary HTTPS site.
Setup on campus, after the captive portal
- 1Join the Wi-Fi and finish the college's login page first. The tunnel cannot start before the network lets you out; if the portal does not appear, open any http:// site to trigger it.
- 2Install a client on your own data beforehand: v2rayNG or Hiddify on Android, Streisand or V2Box on iPhone, Hiddify or NekoRay on a laptop. Get the key from the Telegram bot the same way; some campuses block Telegram itself.
- 3Import the key, pick the United Arab Emirates or Singapore server, connect. On a laptop turn on TUN mode so every app is routed, not only the browser.
- 4Check the What is my IP tool. If the ISP line still shows the college's provider, the connection did not go through the tunnel; reconnect or switch server.
What works on hostel and campus networks
- ✓Sites and apps the campus filter blocks by category: social media, video, music, games, cloud storage.
- ✓Messaging when the college throttles or blocks it: WhatsApp calls, Telegram, Discord.
- ✓The same key on the hostel Wi-Fi, the library, the lab and your Jio or Airtel data when the Wi-Fi is down.
- ✓Five devices at once: laptop, phone, a roommate's tablet if you share the plan.
- ✓Privacy on a shared network: the hostel's Wi-Fi sees one encrypted session to one server, not the sites you open.
Speed on a shared line and what to expect
Hostel Wi-Fi is shared by hundreds of people and is slow at night whether you tunnel or not. The VPN adds about 40 ms to the UAE or Singapore and does not add a speed cap; your share of the campus line is the limit. One side effect helps: because the shaper cannot classify tunnelled traffic as video or gaming, it is not deprioritised the way it would be in the clear. That is a property of the firewall, not a promise from us, and it varies by college.
If the campus network blocks port 443 to unknown hosts, which a few strict ones do, the tunnel will not connect. Switch to mobile data for the session; we would rather tell you that than pretend every network can be passed.
Common campus problems and fixes
- Connected but nothing loads: the captive portal expired. Disconnect the tunnel, reopen the login page, then reconnect.
- Works on the phone, not on the laptop: TUN mode is off, or the laptop is using the college proxy settings. Turn TUN on and remove the manual proxy.
- Telegram blocked so you cannot get the key: fetch it on mobile data once; the key does not change.
- Slow only at night: the shared line, not the tunnel. Compare with the tunnel off before blaming it.
- Wi-Fi that needs a certificate installed: some colleges inspect traffic with their own root certificate. Reality still completes a normal handshake, but a network that inspects everything is one you should not do banking on, tunnel or not.
What we will not help with
Cheating on online exams or proctored tests, hiding from a college's legitimate policy on its own network, or anything against your institution's rules; check what your college allows before you use any VPN on its network. We also do not run servers inside India, do not promise anonymity, and do not touch gambling or piracy platforms. The key gives you an encrypted connection and an exit abroad. What you do with it on campus is your responsibility, and we say so plainly.

What we know about you: almost nothing
There is no account here. You never give us an email, a phone number or a name, so there is no profile to leak, sell or hand over. We know that a key exists and when it expires. We do not know what you open with it. Our servers are outside India, which puts us out of scope of the CERT-In directive requiring providers to store user records for five years. Providers who kept servers inside the country had to choose between complying and leaving, and most of them left. We are telling you where we stand instead of implying we are beyond every jurisdiction, which no one is.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about a VPN for college Wi-Fi
Why does my VPN app not work on college Wi-Fi?
Campus firewalls allow only web ports and block VPN protocols by their handshake. OpenVPN and WireGuard are easy to spot. A VLESS key over port 443 looks like ordinary HTTPS and passes.
Is it legal to use a VPN on college Wi-Fi in India?
Using a VPN is legal in India. Your college's own network policy is a separate matter; read it, and do not use the tunnel to break institutional rules.
Do I need to connect before the login page?
No, after. The captive portal must let you out first; then the tunnel starts. If pages stop loading later, the portal session expired and needs a new login.
Will it make the hostel Wi-Fi faster?
No. Your share of the shared line is the limit. Sometimes tunnelled traffic escapes the shaper's video or gaming deprioritisation, which can feel faster, but that depends on the college's firewall.
Can the college see what I open through the VPN?
It sees one encrypted TLS session to one server and how much data went through it. It does not see the sites or apps inside the tunnel.
What if the campus blocks port 443 to unknown sites?
Then the tunnel cannot connect, and no honest VPN can. Use mobile data for that session. A few strict campuses do this; most do not.
