The plain version
Normally your phone talks to a website directly through Jio or Airtel: the site sees your Indian IP address, and the operator sees which sites you visit. With a VPN, the phone first opens an encrypted tunnel to a VPN server, say in the UAE, and everything goes through it. The site now sees the UAE server's address. The operator sees one encrypted connection to one server and nothing about what is inside.
That is the whole idea. Everything a VPN is used for, reaching a blocked app, passing a campus filter, hiding what you visit from the Wi-Fi owner, follows from those two changes.
What is a VPN app, and why we do not have one

VPN on mobile versus PC
On a phone the client routes every app automatically. On a PC many clients start in proxy mode and route only the browser; turn on TUN mode so that every program goes through the tunnel. Otherwise the browser shows a UAE address while CapCut or a game still uses your Jio one.
Is it legal in India
Yes, for individuals. Since 2022 CERT-In requires providers with servers in India to keep user records for five years, which is why serious providers, including us, keep servers outside the country. Using a VPN to do something illegal is still illegal; the VPN changes what networks see, not the law.
