Free VPN for India 2026: best free India VPN, no card

There are three kinds of free VPN. Apps that are free forever and pay for themselves by selling your browsing data to third parties or injecting ads. Free plans from paid providers, honest but slow from India and limited to a few servers, none of them nearby. And free trials of a paid VPN service, where nothing is charged until you decide.

A common search is for a free VPN that gives an Indian IP address, usually from people outside India who want to access Indian streaming, Hotstar catalogues or a bank that checks the country. We cannot help with that, and we say so up front: we have no India servers, because physical servers inside the country fall under the 2022 CERT-In rules that require providers to keep user data for five years.

Providers that advertise India servers mostly serve virtual Indian IP addresses from Singapore or London; a few free plans include one, most do not. Using a VPN in India, free or paid, is legal. The Indian government regulates the provider, not the user: a VPN provider with servers in India must keep names, addresses and IP records for five years, which is why most privacy providers left the country. Using a VPN for illegal activities stays illegal, with or without the tunnel, and a VPN does not change that.

One more distinction matters. A free app that logs everything to sell it is legal too, which is exactly the problem: legality and privacy are different questions, and a privacy policy that says user data is shared with partners is legal and still bad for you.

The everyday case for a VPN in India is not censorship, it is the network you are on. On college Wi-Fi, in a hostel, at an airport or a cafe, anyone on the same network can see which sites you open; your internet service provider sees all of it at home. The tunnel encrypts your connection so they see one TLS session to one server and nothing else, and websites see the server's IP address instead of yours.

That is what online privacy and security mean in practice: your online activities stay between you and the sites you use. It does not make you anonymous to a service you log into, and it does not help with gambling or piracy platforms, both of which are regulated here and which we stay away from.
