Set up a VPN on Android, step by step

Install a client from Google Play: v2rayNG (the Android standard) or Hiddify (easiest). Both are free and open source.

Open the Telegram bot, press Start, take the free key. It comes as a vless:// link and a QR code.

In the client tap the plus, choose Import from clipboard, or scan the QR from another screen.

Pick United Arab Emirates, tap Connect. Android asks once to allow a VPN connection; allow it. The key icon appears in the status bar.

Open What is my IP in Chrome: the ISP line should show the server country, not Jio or Airtel.
The Android VPN settings page is not this
Settings, Network, VPN on Android configures built-in IKEv2, L2TP and PPTP connections. Those need a server, username and password, and Jio and Airtel throttle all three. Leave that page alone; the client you installed creates its own tunnel and that is what the status bar icon shows.
Brand specifics
- Samsung: allow the client in Battery, Unrestricted, otherwise One UI kills the tunnel in the background.
- Xiaomi, Redmi, Poco: turn on Autostart for the client and set battery saver to No restrictions.
- Vivo, Oppo, Realme: same story under Battery optimisation; also allow background running.
- OnePlus and Pixel: usually nothing to change.
- Any phone: if Always-on VPN is offered in the system VPN page for the client, turn it on so the tunnel restores after reboot.

Does not connect?
Check that the profile is selected in the client, then that the status bar shows the key icon. If the icon is there but sites still show a Jio IP, set DNS inside the client to 1.1.1.1. If nothing connects on your network at all, switch server; if that fails, message support before paying anything.
Why a client and not a VPN app
